The Lord’s Prayer in Russian

The Lords Prayer in RussianWhenever we at the Living Hour think about Russia and the Lord’s Prayer, we can’t help but also think about the work of Leo Tolstoy. You are likely familiar with Tolstoy’s epic novel War & Peace, which many consider the best novel ever written.

What you may not know is that Tolstoy is also a prominent figure in the history of progressive Christianity, having written several thought provoking works on Christian theology that influenced such influential figures as Martin Luther King and Gandhi—please see our post: The Kingdom of God is Within You.

But let’s now share with you a Russian translation of the Our Father prayer, which Jesus taught his disciples, along with a transliteration of the prayer for those who cannot read Russian.

Russian Translation of Our Father Prayer

Отче наш, сущий на небесах,
Oht-che nah-sh, soo-scheey nah nee-bee-sah-kh,
Our Father who art in heaven,

Да святится имя Твое;
Da svya-tee-tsah ee-mya tvah-yo;
Hallowed be thy name;

Да приидет Царствие Твое,
Da pree-ee-dyet tsahr-stvee-ye tvah-yo,
Thy Kingdom come,

Да будет воля Твоя и на земле, как на небе,
Da boo-dyet voh-lya tvah-ya ee nah zeem-lye,
Thy will be done,

как на небе;
kahk nah nye-bye;
on earth as it is in heaven;

Хлеб наш насущный дай нам на сей день;
Khlyep nah-sh nah-soosch-neey dah-y nahm nah sye-y dyen;
Give us this day our daily bread;

И прости нам долги наши,
Ee prahs-tee nahm dahl-gee nah-shee,
And forgive us our tresspasses,

Как и мы прощаем должникам нашим;
Kahk ee mee prah-sch-ah-yem dahl-zhnee-kahm nah-sheem;
As we forgive those who trespass against us;

И не введи нас в искушение,
Ee nye vvye-dee nahs v ees-koo-shye-nee-ye
And lead us not into temptation

Ðо избавь нас от лукавого;
Noh eez-bah-f’ nahs aht loo-kah-vah-vah;
But deliver us from evil;

Ибо Твое есть Царство и сила и слава во веки.
Ee-bah tvah-yo yest’ Tsahr-stvah ee see-lah ee slah-vah vah vye-kee.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever.

Аминь
Ah-meen’
Amen
